A Brief History... It is believed that percussion began around 6000 BC. At that time, percussion consisted of anything that could be struck or hit together to produce a sound. Used as a method of communication, percussion later evolved into musical instruments. Constructed of hollowed out logs and gourd with skin stretched across one of the open ends, the drum was created. Interesting, drums have been part of nearly every culture around the world. There use is very important in rituals and religious ceremonies around the globe. Drums have been used on many battlefields, including the American Civil War representing the different sides as they battled for victory. In many cases, these brave solders who proudly carried and played these drums were the first to die during a battle. During the early 1930’s it was found that if several drums were placed closely together, they could be played by one person with practice. The result… the birth of the drum set. From that day forward, people created their own variations and sounds that have become today’s drums and percussion. |
